About Me
_
Hi! I'm Amalia (she/they) and I work with adults who have a difficult time being kind to themselves, particularly in the face of pain or stress. I believe in the power of self-compassion as a foundation for healing. In sessions, I am warm, direct, casual, and down-to-earth, and will gently challenge you to see yourself and your life in ways that will support new meaning and growth.
Treatment Approach
_
My primary treatment modality is trauma-informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a form of treatment that focuses on the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and actions. Being able to step outside of overwhelming thoughts, think critically about those thoughts, and change those thoughts to improve mood is one of the most powerful techniques we have. I love combining CBT with body-based techniques to help soothe the nervous system and get in touch with how emotions show up as sensations in the body.
I also utilize EMDR (EMDRIA-approved level I and II training completed) to target specific traumatic experiences and reduce reactivity to present-day triggers. I integrate aspects of feminist/empowerment theory, assertiveness training, nonviolent communication techniques, mindfulness skills, narrative therapy, motivational interviewing, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy(DBT) skill building, and creative arts. Above all else, I work to value and honor the therapeutic relationship and tailor my approach to each individual I see.
I work to support LGBTQIA+ folks both by drawing from my own LGBTQIA+ identity and experience, and by constantly learning, expanding, and deepening my understanding of my LGBTQIA+ clients' unique experiences, joys, and struggles. I am passionate about queer history, the freedom that comes from embracing and exploring identity, and finding new ways to value and celebrate ourselves and one another.
